Back with the St. Louis Rams as defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams denied stealing playbooks.
Williams was in the news recently when retired defensive end Renaldo Wynn said that Williams told him he had a Jacksonville Jaguars playbook before the Tennessee Titans played the Jaguars in the AFC championship game during the 1999 season.
"That was really a joke story," Williams said during a press conference today. "That was a joke to me. I have playbooks of everybody's team Every time a free agent walks in a building, comes to the building, he gives you the playbook. We all have everybody's playbook. I love to collect playbooks."
Williams was hired by Rams coach Jeff Fisher in 2012, but was suspended for the season due to the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal involving him.
Fisher said that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell recommended Williams after he discussed the former Saints assistant with the top NFL executive.
Goodell "not only endorsed Gregg, but felt that Gregg would be a good move."
Williams replaces Tim Walton as defensive coordinator.
"I gave a lot of thought to the future and the direction to our defense," Fisher said. "I have to say, I was a little bit uncomfortable."
