Hakeem Nicks doesn't show for OTA

No one expected Victor Cruz to be present on Wednesday for the New York Giants’ OTA session.

But everybody, most importantly coach Tom Coughlin, did figure fellow wide receiver Hakeem Nicks to be in attendance. But Nicks (along with Cruz) was a no show, according to Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News, leaving the coach seemingly a little miffed.

I don’t know,” Coughlin said, per the report. “He should be here … I expect everybody here. We’re trying to get our team better.”

Of course, the offseason program is voluntary for players with the exception of the veteran three-day minicamp. Count Eli Manning among those disappointed Nicks didn’t volunteer on this day.

“You want to make sure your guys are healthy at the start of the year and that’s always the number one thing,”the quarterback said. “But you’ve also got to get some work. We need to improve. We’ve got to rep things. We’ve got to make sure we’re doing everything we can to make sure we’re playing at our best. That involves being healthy and also involves practice and getting reps.

“You’ve still got to work on your timing. You’ve still got to work on the basics and everybody needs it. I need the basics. How many times have I thrown a hitch in my life? Or a curl route? I’ve still got to do it . . . We all need to work. We all need to practice. We all need to improve on things.”

Nicks is working his way back from a knee injury but he was at earlier portions of the team’s offseason program and everyone expected him. Until it is sorted out, many will wonder if the move was contract related. Cruz is seeking a long-term deal and Nicks’ rookie contract expires after this season.
