Henry Melton says long-term deal ‘pretty much out of my hands’

Henry Melton does not know if a long-term contract is coming for him before Monday’s deadline.

The Chicago Bears defensive tackle, who otherwise will earn $8.45 million this season with the franchise tag, is waiting to see what happens and tells Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune there has been “chatter” between the club and his agent Jordan Woy but nothing to make him believe a deal is imminent.

I can only control what I can control, and that's my performance on the field,'' said Melton, who was Pro Bowl selection last season when he had seven sacks. “It's kind of like when you have strong feelings for a place — you want to stay there long term. Of course you want to get something done, but it's pretty much out of my hands.''

If Melton doesn’t get a multi-year contract, he’ll be in a contract season once again but says he’s motivated to be a great player, not get paid.
