The Cowboys’ DeMarco Murray set a franchise record with 253-yards rushing in Dallas’ 34-7 win over St. Louis. Today, I want to look at his 91-yard TD run early in the game.
A quick setup. Dallas has Regular personnel (2 WR, 1 TE, 2 RB) on the field in a “Houston” alignment (3 WR, 2 RB) with TE Jason Witten removed from the core of the formation. For the Rams, a base 4-3 “Over” front playing 2-Man (2-deep, man-underneath) in the secondary.
Nothing complicated here from the Cowboys on the Lead Draw action. Check out the replay and then we will get into some coaching points.
- Two blocks to keep an eye on here with Witten and the FB. This is a base-blocking scheme. Witten turns out the Sam (strong) linebacker and the FB leads up through the hole on the Mike (middle) linebacker. No trap or counter action here. A simple slide step from Murray and get up through the hole.
-Check out the Left Guard. Double-down on the Nose and then work up to the second level to block the Will (weak) linebacker. That is what it should look like up on the chalkboard.
- CBs are removed from the play. That’s the risk you take any time you call Cover 1 (man-free) or in this case, 2-Man. Both CBs have to play the initial release of the WR. Plus, if they are reading through to the QB on the 3-step game, they see pass because of Romo’s initial setup.
- 2-Man is no different than Cover 2 when we talk run fits at the safety position. Play the “alley” (inside CB and the core of the formation) vs. any edge run or take an inside-out angle to the ball between the numbers. Here, the SS plays out of control, doesn’t break down and slips on the turf because of it. The FS? Bad angle to the ball. Don’t run to a cut off point in the open field. Instead, track the inside shoulder of the RB and force him to cut back right into the tackle.
