New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith said he's been assured the quarterback competition isn't a closed case for incumbent Mark Sanchez.
With Smith sidelined for the Jets' second preseason game with an ankle injury that's improving, the second-round draft pick hopes he's still in the running.
"I was told the competition is still open," Smith said, per ESPN New York.
Smith had a "brutal" practice this week, according to coach Rex Ryan, where he was intercepted several times.
"I wanted to be out there in practice," Smith said. "I wouldn’t allow them to keep me out of practice."
Smith could potentially get a start in the third preseason game, but nothing has been decided.
Sanchez is still throwing interceptions, too.
So, nothing has been decided yet.
