Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi worked out this week for the Miami Dolphins, according to a league source. The former Hawkeye is reported to be drawing interest from Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers and has also been through a private workout with the New England Patriots.
ICONStanzi is drawing strong interest throughout the league.
With Chad Pennington tearing an ACL in a pick-up basketball game and the limited amount of overall talent in the veteran free agent pool at the position, Stanzi’s stock is on the rise with less than a month until the NFL draft.
The senior QB played in a pro-style system under Kirk Ferentz and offensive coordinator Ken O’Keefe at Iowa and is widely regarded by league personnel as a dedicated student of the game in the film room.
Talking with NFL scouts, Stanzi is labeled as a mid-round prospect that has upside. He played in the Senior Bowl in January and threw in front of representatives for all 32 NFL clubs at the Iowa pro day. He will also work out for several teams in an additional pro day April 4th on campus.
He finished his senior season in Iowa City with 3,044-yards passing, 25 TDs and only 6 INTs as he led the Hawkeyes to an Insight Bowl win over Missouri. As a junior, Stanzi threw for 231-yards and 2 TDs in Iowa’s win over Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
