Colts owner Jim Irsay was plenty emotional last year when he wound up releasing quarterback Peyton Manning.
But in an exclusive interview with the Indianapolis Star, Irsay says Manning's time in Indianapolis could have been eight years less had then-team president Bill Polian gotten his way back in 2004.
According to Irsay, Polian, frustrated over negotiations on Manning's $98 million contract extension, said, "We need to trade Peyton; we can get a bunch of defensive players and become like Tampa Bay or Baltimore.”
But Irsay said he quickly vetoed that notion, telling Polian, "Understand something, Bill, we are not trading Peyton Manning, period."
