Rookie Kirkpatrick could land starting left cornerback spot, making vet expendable. Terry McCormick
The Cincinnati Bengals selection of Alabama cornerback Dre' Kirkpatrick in the first round of the NFL Draft last week could be a bad sign for veteran corner Nate Clements, says Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Reedy, in answering a reader's question, speculates that Clements and his $4.3 million base salary could be something the Bengals would like to wipe off the books with one year remaining on his contract, if Kirkpatrick is indeed slated to be the starter in Cincinnati at left cornerback.
Reedy indicated that Clements could be a June 1 casualty. He also has a $200,000 reporting bonus in his contract.
