Could the San Francisco 49ers be fixing to use Vernon Davis on the outside this season?
It’s an interesting idea as Grant Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports Davis was lined up exclusively as a wide receiver in the team’s most recent minicamp. It must seem like an eternity to Davis since he was playing under former offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who used Davis more as a pass blocker than a pass receiver in one season.
Cohn points out the team might send Davis outside more because newly acquired wide receiver Anquan Boldin is better on the inside as a slot receiver. Davis has the speed to get vertical. Also, it’s worth pointing out San Francisco invested a second-round draft pick in Rice tight end Vance McDonald, and he could be used in line while Davis is outside.
