This past week, the NFP’s Michael Lombardi wrote about Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst possibly landing in Arizona with Ken Whisenhunt and challenging Matt Leinart for playing time.
Seattle is another squad that has already looked into the idea of landing Whitehurst, and now there are reports that both clubs could be close to signing the Chargers backup QB to an offer sheet. We can look at the Seattle interest in Whitehurst as a possible move for the future once the club transitions away from current starter Matt Hasselbeck. Or, just like Arizona, as more competition during training camp.
The question still remains, why Whitehurst — a RFA will little game experience?
Sources within the league are high on Whitehurst because he is a tall, athletic QB with a big arm. Although he is in a situation in San Diego where he is buried behind Philip Rivers, head coach Norv Turner is very high on his skill set, and there have been multiple voices who believe that Whitehurst is a strong worker and a player who does project as a very good pro.
I have been told that the ideal system for Whitehurst is a scheme that values the vertical, down the field passing game. He is a QB who brings good value and is much more polished than the majority of rookie QBs coming out this season.
Not unlike Troy Smith — who is stuck behind Joe Flacco in Baltimore — Whitehurst needs an opportunity. He isn’t the type of player that comes into camp with the starting gig locked up, but he does provide a competitive environment if he ends up in the right system. And, he could be the type of QB who flourishes when given that opportunity in August.
With Whitehurst, we could be looking at a very similar situation that landed Matt Schaub in Houston. A backup QB playing behind a bigger name who is looked at by NFL personnel men as a possible starter in their system.
Both Seattle and Arizona have reasons to go after the former Clemson QB. The situation in Arizona isn’t a sure thing with Leinart, and in Seattle with Carroll now in control, anything goes. New coaches love to make moves and they love to bring in new talent to challenge the roster holdovers.
It could be time to shake things up in Arizona or Seattle.

Its a better option than signing a has been like Mcnabb or the other experienced vets. Seattle has had very bad luck in when signing veterans past there prime. They always seem to get injured and spend most of there high salaried year on the injured list. I wouldn't mind seeing either Anderson or Whitehurst in Seattle to groom for replacing Hasselbeck. He has been good for us but he is nearing his end. As far as the draft goes I hope the grab spiller and an left tackle. You can never have to much speed or quality linemen.

Whitehurst is a good move. 2 young QB's in the stable. Some of the best NFL QB's come from under the third round. Frees up the draft for OL, S, WR, etc

If the Browns don't look his way, they go QB this year's draft? Probably should look his way and go QB. Keep adding comp to the position, that first camp should be the one to set a tone for your team era. You plan on being there a while and making it into a high energy item.
Smith and Whitehurst are great options, had Gradkowski not got injured he'd be elevated to this conversation as well. Holmgren getting Seneca Wallace says a lot about the player's work ethic and what he can bring to a roster. Each has that drive to improve, each has worth and can be value signings.
