The Houston Texans' top overall pick, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, underwent a sports hernia procedure on Thursday, coach Bill O'Brien told reporters, via ESPN.com.

Clowney is expected to be back for the start of training camp, though he'll miss some valuable on-field instruction time.

Clowney is projected to start for the Houston defense, though defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel recently told reporters that he'd have to earn playing time.

The groin injury reportedly bothered Clowney to the point where he visited a specialist in Philadelphia to have it looked at.

The good news for the Texans is that it's better to have a lingering injury like this taken care of now as opposed to training camp, when Clowney would miss much more valuable practice time.
