New Orleans Saints safety Jairus Byrd had back surgery, but is expected to return next week.
Saints coach Sean Payton said the surgery didn't have to be performed, but it was deemed better to have it done now.
Payton said if Byrd was having the same issue during the season he would have just received treatment rather than having surgery.
"He'll start up with training camp with no problem," Payton said.
Byrd was signed to a six-year, $54 million contract after previously playing for the Buffalo Bills.
