Of the rookie quarterbacks to get a shot at starting the first week of the season, Derek Carr wasn't among the favorites.
None of the first round quarterbacks — Blake Bortles (Jaguars), Johnny Manziel (Browns) and Teddy Bridgewater (Vikings) — will start on Sunday. But Carr will start Oakland's season-opener against the Jets.
Of course, this means Carr outperformed Matt Schaub this preseason — which shouldn't be that shocking since this is the second year in a row the Raiders have brought in an outside quarterback that got beat out. But as receiver James Jones put it, Carr possesses some quality traits that's turned heads of his teammates during practice.
“[Carr's] really calm, really cool in the pocket,” Jones said, via The San Francisco Chronicle. “He acts like he’s been there before. I’ve been calling him mini A-Rod since he got here.”
Not many people would go out on a limb and essentially compare Carr to Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But there's Jones giving his rookie quarterback a huge boost of confidence in the press.
Carr can be expected to have some early growing pains this season. But at least, for Carr's sake, he knows his top wideout has his back.
