You can start the speculation that Sage Rosenfels could be on his way out in Minnesota.
Of course, any shakeup on the quarterback depth chart for the Vikings is contingent on Brett Favre returning for a 20th season in the NFL.
But if you can base much – or anything – off the team’s minicamp, it could be that Joe Webb will push for a job as the third quarterback. He got extensive work with the second team, relegating Rosenfels to some sparse work with the third team. It makes sense from the standpoint that the Vikings would surely like to have a developmental project on their roster.
Drafted in the sixth round from Alabama-Birmingham with the intention of moving him to wide receiver, the Vikings decided to first try him at quarterback after rookie minicamp. Tarvaris Jackson is entrenched as the backup to Favre and after that it could be up in the air. Rosenfels received only two snaps in 11-on-11 work during the second practice Saturday, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
"It's obvious they saw a lot of potential in me, decided to throw me in the fire," Webb said. "I need to take full advantage of it. Take command of the huddle, take command of the team."
Rosenfels declined to comment. Obviously, no move will happen until the Favre situation plays itself out. The Vikings could always try to stash Webb on the practice squad too. For now, they have some time to evaluate him and see if they want to keep him at quarterback or continue to with the original plan to move him to receiver.
