Jerry Jones 'has a sense' of what team can do with Tony Romo

Jerry Jones doesn’t seem anxious or concerned whether or not the Dallas Cowboys will be able to get a long-term contract extension complete for Tony Romo.

The quarterback is entering the final year of his contract and with a cap number above $16 million, the team can achieve significant relief with a multi-year deal that would also keep Romo in place for the long haul, perhaps the remainder of his career.

“That would be the most positive result if we signed him, extended him and then we had him retire," Jones said, according to Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News. "That means we've had some success, and I would like for that to happen."

There have not been any real contract talks between the sides yet. The Cowboys need to be positioned before the start of the new league year on March 12 and Jones said he has a “general sense of what we can get done” in terms of a contract.
 

"We aren't sitting down and working on the details of an agreement,” he said. “I have a sense of what is doable. Tony has a long history in his career of working to make this thing fit for the team.”

One player that will not likely be “doable” for the Cowboys is outside linebacker Anthony Spencer. Given Dallas’ deep cap issues, Spencer will likely exit via free agency after playing under the franchise tag last year.
