The New York Jets have released veteran wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the team announced

Holmes is scheduled to earn an $8.25 million base salary in 2014, which played a major role in this decision.

Holmes, 30, caught just 23 passes for 456 yards and one touchdown last season.

He has played in just 15 games over the past two seasons.

For his career, Holmes has caught 381 passes for 5,963 yards and 36 touchdowns.
