WR Hill released to make room on 53-man list. Terry McCormick
Former rugby star Hayden Smith, who is making the transition to American football, has been promoted to the New York Jets' 53-man roster, according to Newsday.
Tight end Jeff Cumberland suffered a hand injury, and the Jets could need Smith to be their second tight end on Sunday.
Smith, who worked out for several NFL teams in the off-season, signed with the Jets this summer and had been on the team's practice squad while learning and transitioning to the NFL after having been a rugby star.
To make room on the 53-man roster, the Jets waived wide receiver Jason Hill on Saturday.
