New York Jets punter Steve Weatherford underwent a heart procedure last week to combat the irregular heartbeat that sidelined him for a playoff game last season.

“I want my coaches to have full confidence in me and that was something that needed to be done,” Weatherford told the Associated Press. “I don’t want that to ever be an issue again. I want to grow old and be a dad for many years to come, and if you can fix it, why not?”

The surgery is called cardiac ablation, described as a "minimally invasive procedure" to treat abnormal heart rhythms.

“They cauterized the overactive nodes in my heart,” Weatherford said. “It went really well, the doctors did an awesome job and I’m ready to roll now.”

And Weatherford is confident that he won't have any troubles in the future.

“The risk of what happened to me in the Cincinnati game is not going to happen again,” Weatherford said. “That helps for me, but I’m sure they can rest easier knowing that all of the sudden, I’m not going to be like, ‘Oh, I can’t punt. My heart’s doing the same thing again.”’
