The New York Jets have switched punters just days before they are set to open the season against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
New York waived punter T.J. Conley, who held the job last year, and signed Robert Malone, who was waived by the San Diego Chargers in final cuts on Friday, to replace him, says Newsday.
The Jets had been unhappy enough with Conley that they brought in Spencer Lanning to compete with him before the preseason finale. After Conley, who had struggled with consistency, beat out Lanning, he appeared to be safe. That is, until the Jets landed Malone on Tuesday.
The Jets also re-signed defensive tackle Marcus Dixon, according to his agent, just three days after being let go.
