Jim Harbaugh got in a Thanksgiving mood a little early.
The San Francisco 49ers coach came to the defense of his quarterback Alex Smith, who had not played well in recent weeks entering the team’s game Monday night at Arizona.
Smith was on the mark, though, setting an NFL record for accuracy as he completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-3 beatdown of the Cardinals. The one incompletion? That was a drop.
So, what about Harbaugh and reports about his faith in the quarterback, who resurrected his career last season?
“I think it's just a lot of gobble, gobble, turkey,” Harbaugh said, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. “Just gobble, gobble, gobble turkey. That paints a pretty good picture. He's a very confident guy.”
Smith doesn’t seem overly concerned that he still has critics who doubt in his ability to lead the team, especially if the 49ers face a deficit.
“At this point, I don't care. If you had asked me that a few years ago, maybe, but at this point I don't really care,” he said, according to the report. “I'm only about winning, and the guys in the locker room know what I am about. That's all that really matters.”
