Joe Montana says city of San Francisco dropped the ball

Retired San Francisco 49ers legendary quarterback Joe Montana criticized the city of San Francisco for failing to get a stadium built to keep the NFC West franchise within the city limits.

Instead, the 49ers are moving to Santa Clara near team headquarters to a new stadium and will no longer play at iconic, run-down Candlestick Park in San Francisco after this season.

Politicians in San Francisco “made a terrible effort” to keep the team in the city, Montana told Bay Area reporters, but acknowledged, “It's not like they went to Oakland.”

He called Candlestick the worst stadium he had played in, referring to its nickname: “The Quagmire.”
