The New York Giants could be looking at backups as insurance policies for Eli Manning.

One of those appears to be Josh Freeman, the once-starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to a report from Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman, Freeman will work out next week with the Giants.

Ironically, the Giants were the team that stifled Freeman in his lone start after being traded to Minnesota last season. In a 23-7 loss, Freeman completed just 20 of 53 passes for 190 yards and an interception. That was his last start for the season, which followed three starts with the Bucs before his benching there.

Freeman was once considered the franchise quarterback of the Bucs. In 2012, Freeman threw for 4,065 yards, 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

He was expected to take a leap last season but fell out of favor with Bucs coach Greg Schiano. It's clear he's now regarded as a backup at this stage of his NFL career.

This follows the news that Eli Manning had ankle surgery after spraining it in the Giants' regular season finale.
