The mother of late Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the AFC West franchise.

The lawsuit was filed after his body was exhumed in order for his brain to be examined for evidence of repeated concussions, according to the Associated Press.

Per the lawsuit, Belcher experienced “repetitive head traum” that the Chiefs didn't provide sufficient medical care prior to him killing himself by a gunshot wound after killing his girlfriend.

Cheryl Shepherd, Belcher's mother, is seeing more than $15,000 in actual damages and punitive damages.

Belcher is being tested for CTE, the degenerative neurological condition linked to concussions with symptoms of behavioral changes, memory problems and dementia.

Belcher's mother is alleging the Chiefs didn't warn her sons about the risks of concussions, didn't remove him from practices and games after concussions, didn't monitor him for neurological problems, etc.

Belcher was knocked out during a 2009 game and returned to team activities without receiving adequate medical treatment, according to the lawsuit.
