Les Miles and the LSU Tigers held their spring game Saturday in Baton Rouge. Here are some notes from the team's concluding spring showcase.
• Junior Zach Mettenberger made his debut as the new starting quarterback, and he impressed fans at Tiger Stadium in leading the White team to a 24-17 win over the Purple squad. He went 14-of-25 passing for 270 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions, and the offense made a commitment to take consistent shots down the field. Mettenberger clearly has an arm that hasn't been seen from an LSU quarterback in quite awhile, and the vertical passing game will be in good hands in the fall. While he was picked off in the end zone midway through the first quarter, Mettenberger bounced back to toss a 49-yard touchdown to sophomore receiver Odell Beckham on the next drive.
• Despite losing Reuben Randle, the Tigers have good talent at receiver. And Beckham showed that he is ready to be an even bigger part of the offense, catching three balls for 115 yards and a score. He should be the Tigers' top deep threat, and he should take advantage of Mettenberger's big arm. Sophomore Jarvis Landry will also benefit from Mettenberger's cannon, as he caught six balls for 120 yards on the day.
• The rushing attack once again displayed its depth, with sophomore Kenny Hilliard registering eight carries for 40 yards to lead the Purple team, while junior Alfred Blue had 73 yards on nine carries for the White squad.
• Freshman linebacker Lamar Louis intercepted Mettenberger and ran it back for a touchdown. Despite losing cornerback Morris Claiborne and tackle Michael Brockers, this will always be a playmaking defense under coordinator John Chavis. Especially with "Honey Badger" Tyrann Mathieu returning for his junior year. Freshman Ronnie Feist added seven tackles, with 1.5 coming for a loss, in the contest. One other freshman who stood out was offensive tackle Vadal Alexander, who held his own against the strong defensive line.

Based off of the game Saturday, strong play from the QB, a deep rushing attack and another strong defense is on the horizon in Baton Rouge this fall.
