Newly-minted New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson insists that he hasn't lost a step despite coming off a career-low season for rushing yards.

Tomlinson, who turns 31 in June, told Jets reporters during a conference call today that he still has breakaway speed.

"I still have very good speed," Tomlinson said. "I'm still in great shape. I think I'll be able to prove that I have good speed."

Meanwhile, Tomlinson acknowledged that he chose the Jets, who signed him to a two-year contract, over the Minnesota Vikings because of his background with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer when they were in San Diego.

"I had two places that wanted me and I think the major decision it came down to was playing in a new offense or playing in an offense I already know with Brian Schottenheimer," Tomlinson said. "It was pretty tough but when it comes down to it you've got to go with your gut and go with what you feel."

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum indicated that the team still plans to incorporate Leon Washington, who's recovering from a broken leg, into the game plan and said that Tomlinson and Shonn Greene should be able to split the workload amicably.

"Maybe we'll see LaDainian and Shonn in the same backfield, or LaDainian and Leon," Tannenbaum said. "We're going to run the ball a lot. That's our offensive philosophy."

Still having speed is only one of many age/injury questions. What are the other injury reasons that LT could only average 3.3 yards a carry last year?

A poor run blocking OL, a head coach not committed to the running game, 2 all pro receivers and an all pro QB.....lots of reasons..........

He isnt a 30 carry back anymore, but he will probably do well this year because they will be running a scheme he is familar with and excelled in, and the Jets will only use him for 10-15 plays a game.

They get him for 2 years at the same price they would have had to pay TJ for one.

"I still have very good speed... just not on tape or during games."
