Traveling to play games out of the country might not be for every player, but Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs embraces the opportunity.
In fact, he wishes the Bears’ game Sunday against the Buffalo Bills at the Rogers Centre in Toronto was at night. It would give him a few more extra hours of free time to explore the city.
“Would love to play in London, Mexico (and) send postcards from there to home,’’ Briggs said.
Briggs will get a chance to fill out a couple postcards from Toronto if he would like to, but the team arrives Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and the kickoff is 22 ½ hours later.
“We get to see the ground from the airplane," Briggs joked. "There are different runways.”
Briggs embraces the idea of games overseas even if it means the Bears would potentially have to lose a home date at Soldier Field. This game, obviously, is a home game for the Bills.
“Well, shoot, if you want to get international attention that is what you’re going to have to do,” he said. “I think a Super Bowl in London would be pretty awesome.
“You put a team in London, you put a team in Mexico City, you have all of the neighboring countries, maybe a team in Dublin (Ireland).”
Doesn’t that affect players?
“You leave early in the week,” Briggs said.
He sees the trade off for international exposure and says it’s worth the negatives that would come along with long-distance travel.
“It’s the future and I think it’s coming,” he said. “You have to fight it or embrace it, but there are some changes that are coming. If you want this thing to be global, and people to pick up on it, you have to be there for them to see it. It’s the only way it’s going to really work.”
