The Washington Redskins signed running back Larry Johnson to a three-year deal with a maximum value of $12 million.
"We are excited to bring in a running back that has had so much success in this league," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said."Larry is a physical runner who will be a great addition to our backfield."
He's slated to back up Clinton Portis.
Johnson's last 1,000-yard season was in 2006.
Johnson rushed for 1,789 yards in 2006 and 1,750 yards in 2005.
He was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals last season after being cut by the Kansas City Chiefs last season when he had a falling-out with coach Todd Haley.
He rushed for 204 yards with the Bengals.
Johnson was expected to visit the Oakland Raiders, but opted to join the Redskins.
For Johnson, whose father, Larry Johnson Sr. was a successful high school coach in Maryland before becoming the Penn State defensive line coach, this represents something of a homecoming.

Well I hope that our new coach can keep him in line...he was a bruiser but a head case. I think we could go for a running back in the late rounds, a speedster like Sporles or Leon Washington. It seems to be a deep draft for running back. All I can say is it is good to see Danny boy taking a back seat and writing the check and keeping his mouth shut and letting football guys run the organization. HTTR!
