Steelers running backs Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount received misdemeanor marijuana possession charges, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Bell, however, was also given a driving while under the influence of marijuana charge, as he was operating a vehicle after smoking. Police allege that a scent of marijuana was coming from a vehicle registerred to Bell before it was pulled over.
Upon a search, 20 grams of marijuana were found. Bell was taken to a hospital to undergo a blood test. Both players will now enter into the NFL's drug testing program as a result.
According to the police complaint, via news outlet WPXI, Bell was unaware that someone could be charged with a DUI after smoking marijuana.
“I didn’t know you could get a DUI for being high," Bell allegedly told police. "I smoked two hours ago. I’m not high anymore. I’m perfectly fine. Why would I be getting high if I had to make it to my game?”
Police said both Bell and Blount, as well as a woman that was in the car with them, were cooperative and polite.
The game Bell was referring to was Pittsburgh's preseason contest against Philadelphia Thursday night. Both backs played, though Bell had to make the trip to Philadelphia by himself. Blount finished the game with 32 yards on seven carries and Bell rushed the ball nine times for 23 yards. The Eagles won 31-21.
"I'm sorry for the distraction that I caused my team," Blount told reporters after the game. "I just want to apologize to my team and my coach and my organization for causing that distraction."
It's unknown when the NFL will hand down discipine on this. It's possible that neither back receives any punishment until the case goes through the legal process.
