Lions have made ‘very significant’ offers to Cliff Avril

The Detroit Lions remain hopeful to get defensive end Cliff Avril signed to a long-term contract but right now the defensive end remains a player who is headed toward the 2012 season with the franchise tag.

The club has kept an open line of communication with Avril’s representatives at New York-based Sportstars. But they have not been able to make a breakthrough.

Continue to have dialogue with Cliff and his agent,” Lions president Tom Lewand said, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. “We have made him some very significant multi-year offers. We look forward to having him this year, at least on the franchise tag, and hopefully, beyond.”

The Lions have a little less than three months to strike a deal and following the draft it will surely become one of their top focuses.
