The Detroit Lions remain in information gathering mode when it comes to the possibility of signing cornerback Pacman Jones.

The Lions were one of four teams represented at Jones’ workout Friday in New Orleans, but even as problematic as their secondary is, they’re not ready to roll the dice with the often troubled former star. Jones has been suspended for nearly as many games (20) as he has played in during his NFL career (38) after being a first-round pick of the Tennessee Titans when Lions coach Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator there.

Detroit was represented by vice president of pro personnel Sheldon White at the Jones’ workout, and Schwartz told Tom Kowalski of MLive.com that it’s a possibility for the organization.

“In making the decision, it won't be a football-only decision. There will be other considerations,” Schwartz said. “We want to have a comfort level with him and, like I said, we're still in the information-gathering stage.'

While Schwartz acknowledged that he knows Jones from their time together with the Titans, he points out that was several years (and one hell of a rainstorm) ago.

"He's not going to look bad in a workout. He's a real good athlete,' Schwartz said. "There's more to it than that. You're not signing that guy just off his workout. There's more that needs to be done. If we cross that bridge, that will be an organizational decision.

"Any time you look at players in the league who have been through difficult times and then had success, it makes you keep an open mind. Look at Cris Carter. Should you have not been interested in Cris Carter when he went to Minnesota? He proved that you should've been.

"There's a maturity aspect to that. If you can look at someone and say that he's changed ... I mean, what greater story.'
