Lions will need to crunch some numbers to get under the cap

The Detroit Lions will be crunching numbers to ensure they get under the NFL’s salary cap by Wednesday.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports the club is likely to restructure some contracts in order to fit under the $120.6 million cap. ESPN reported the Lions project to be about $700,000 over.

It’s not just about getting under the cap, the Lions likely need to carve out some space to conduct business this season for when injuries happen and they are forced to add more players.

Birkett reports the Lions restructured contracts of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Nate Burleson in March, an exercise that freed up some $16 million in cap room. Now, they’ll have to find some other players to approach about a restructuring. Or, of course, the Lions could always part ways with a high-priced veteran or two.
