Locker inconsistent in first preseason start

It was believed that if Jake Locker played well Friday night against Tampa Bay, he might have the upper hand in the battle to be the Tennessee Titans' starting quarterback.

But despite the Titans rolling up 30 points in a thrashing of the Buccaneers, Locker's numbers and play were not exactly what the Titans were looking for from the second-year quarterback. He hit on just 4 of 11 throws for 21 yards and had a pass intercepted by Ahmad Black on a bad overthrow down the middle of the field.

In fairness, Locker had a nice throw dropped by Jared Cook and also had two key scrambles for 24 yards, but his play overall could best be described as spotty.

“We weren’t as crisp as we wanted to be in the passing game. I think we can clean up some of those things, but I?thought the running game was really good tonight and picked us up. We’ve been working hard on that,” Locker said via TitanInsider.com.

Matt Hasselbeck played only briefly Friday night, but hit on 4 of 5 throws for 29 yards.

The Titans had hoped to have the matter settled by next week to move forward with naming a starting quarterback, but that might take a little longer than expected.
