Mike London continues to successfully rebuild the Virginia football program, netting a commitment from another dynamic player as running back Taquan “Smoke” Mizzell announced Tuesday that he will become a Cavalier.
The 5-10, 184-pound Class of 2013 product from Bayside High School (Virginia Beach, VA) had offers from more than 20 FBS schools, including other finalists West Virginia and North Carolina. He becomes the first five-star prospect of the London era, according to rankings established by Rivals.com. Offensive lineman Eugene Monroe was the site's last five-star recruit to choose the Cavs back in 2005.
The recruiting website upgraded the running back's ranking on Monday after he had several impressive performances on the recruiting camp circuit this summer.
The speedster's best asset is his elusiveness, and he's an excellent receiver out of the backfield. In 2011 he rushed for 1,098 yards and 23 touchdowns while playing through an ankle injury.
Current Cavaliers Henry Coley (linebacker), Demetrious Nicholson (cornerback) and Anthony Cooper (wide receiver/defensive back) all played at Bayside, which has become a hot spot for London since his arrival.
The Cavaliers now have 18 commitments for the Class of 2013.
