Lovie Smith says Henry Melton needs to show more

It’s not often that Lovie Smith publicly singles out a Chicago Bears player, but that’s what he did Thursday afternoon following practice when he said he’d pulled Henry Melton aside and told him he needed to see more.

The defensive tackle began the season with a bang when he had two sacks and six quarterback pressures in the opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Since, Melton has been harder to find, and Smith is ready to turn up the heat on the first-year starter who has taken the place of former Bear Tommie Harris.

“Whether teams have adjusted to him or whatever, we need to get more production from him because he's capable of it,” Smith said.

Melton says the conversation he had with the coach was brief and the message was simple: Show up.

I've been playing at a very high level. It's just that there aren't a lot of statistics to go with it,'' Melton said. “But, honestly, I've gotten A's and B's on my game grades.

“I want to be very dominant. To do that, I have to show up even more than I am.''
