Former Jacksonville Jaguars Pro Bowl quarterback Mark Brunell is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a decision prompted by failed real estate ventures.

According to the Florida Times-Union, Brunell will file for the protection this morning in Jacksonville, Fla.

Per the report, Brunell was paid nearly $52 million over the past decade in the NFL.

Brunell, who's expected to eventually join the New York Jets after playing last season for the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints, is the defendant in several lawsuits.

Brunell has failed real estate and business loans from a business partnership with former teammates Joel Smeenge and Todd Fordham.

“The timing of the group’s real estate acquisitions at the height of the real estate market, in hindsight, clearly was not good,” Brunell said in an e-mail to the Times-Union. “In the end, we couldn’t and I am no longer able to shoulder this burden."
