The Chicago Bears wrapped up their rookie minicamp this afternoon at Halas Hall and offensive coordinator Mike Martz didn’t rule out the possibility that a new veteran quarterback will be in the mix when the full-squad minicamp commences in three weeks.
Of course, Martz doesn’t have say over roster decisions, but he’s got input and having a quarterback with familiarity with his scheme would not hurt. Sixth-round pick Dan LeFevour and tryout player Juice Williams handled quarterback chores this weekend. Caleb Hanie, heading into his third season, is the only other quarterback the Bears have behind starter Jay Cutler.
“(A veteran) would always help,” Martz said. “That's for sure. But he doesn't have to be. A good player is a good player. It's just harder for them to adapt if they've been through several systems. That doesn't mean that's necessarily a bad thing. Jon Kitna had been through a bunch of systems. You'd like a guy because it kind of gives him a leg up and makes it a little bit easier.”
Marc Bulger has been prominently mentioned as a possibility for the Bears but he’s looking for a place to re-start his career, not necessarily hold a clipboard. Bulger would have little chance finding playing time with the Bears. Josh McCown is another option. He played under Martz in Detroit.
“I think Caleb is going to be a real good player but you really don't know,” Martz said. “You look at a guy like Kurt Warner but you know he played in Europe and we looked at all his Europe stuff so we kind of had a feel for him under pressure with blitzes and things like that. I think Caleb will be all right. It just kind of gives you that insurance and pads it a little bit. I think from that aspect it would make us all feel a little bit easier with a veteran but you just never know.”
