Martz says there was a ‘connection’ with Cutler

Inside a classroom on the campus of Vanderbilt University on Saturday, Mike Martz was designing a play on the board for Jay Cutler when Cutler asked something about a wide receiver’s alignment that impressed Martz.

That was a good sign, but it had nothing to do with the quality of the question.

For the Bears’ sake, that had better be the way it stays.

“There was an instant connection,’ Martz said Monday.

One day that connection between Martz and Cutler may produce the type of sparks that nobody at Halas Hall wants, and that’s part of what makes Monday’s development so fascinating.

The Bears hired one of the strongest personalities in modern NFL coaching to fix one of the strongest personalities ever to play for the Bears. Sure, there is high risk in pairing Martz with Cutler.

But imagine the high rewards.

“We wanted to be something different than what we were,’ general manager Jerry Angelo said of his offense.
