McElroy eager for Jets QB competition

With news coming out that the New York Jets quarterback position will be a five-way battle heading into off-season work, at least one of the competitors is embracing the challenge.

That would be former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, who told the Newark Star-Ledger that "It's great obviously, I know competition brings out the best in everybody. I know everyone is looking forward to the competition."

Well, maybe not everyone. Of course, McElroy should relish the chance, because he was buried as the Jets third-stringer most of last year. But, Mark Sanchez, who has been the Jets' starter since his rookie season of 2009, can't be thrilled to see his job be thrown open to all comers, including McElroy, veteran David Garrard, rookie Geno Smith and practice squad QB Matt Simms.

Nonetheless, the Jets are doing everything but holding open auditions to see who will be their next quarterback. It almost seems as if any available quarterback not named Tim Tebow might be given a fighting chance to start for the Jets.
