Sanchez benched in favor of third-stringer who leap-frogs Tebow. Terry McCormick
Greg McElroy is the New York Jets new starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers, replacing Mark Sanchez and leaping over Tim Tebow on the depth chart, says Chris Mortensen of ESPN.com.
The move was made after Sanchez's five-turnover implosion Monday night that helped to eliminate the Jets from playoff contention with their 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
McElroy will get the first start of his career on Sunday and saw action earlier this season, throwing a touchdown pass in a 7-6 win over Arizona after Sanchez was benched in that game and Tebow was out with injured ribs.
