Veteran safety Melvin Bullitt has quietly emerged as one of the most important players on the Indianapolis Colts' defense.
He has solidified the safety position as a hard-nosed tackler while former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Bob Sanders has been sidelined with various injuries.
Sgned by the Colts as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M in 2007, Bullitt started 21 games over the past two seasons.
“He can start on any team, I think, in the NFL,” Pro Bowl safety Antoine Bethea told the Colts' official website. “I give much credit to Melvin Bullitt. He’s done a great job for us.”
Bullitt doubles as a special-teams standout, too.
“I always try to find a way to get on the field,” Bullitt said. “That's what I do, regardless of who's out there or who's not out there. I try to take care of what I need to take care of and go on from there. If you contribute and do well in practice, you'll find a way to get out there.”
Bullitt is a great example of that.
With Bethea entrenched as the starter and Sanders healthy again, for now, Bullitt may not play as much this fall.
He's approaching that possibility with a positive attitude.
"Being in the situation I'm in, you have to approach things a little different,” Bullitt said. “I know that going in, the situation. I approach it as if I'm going to play every down. When the time comes, when I'm out there, I make the best of it.”
