Micah Hyde could alleviate Packers’ safety need

The Green Bay Packers' search for a safety could end by looking at an unheralded defensive back on their own roster.

The Packers are encouraged by the development of Micah Hyde, who could shift to safety on an extended basis this season.

“I mean Micah's to me a multiple position player,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said at the NFL scouting combine, via ESPN. “I'd like to see Micah compete to play all three downs on defense, so if there's a personnel group that he has to play safety, yeah that's an option.”

Hyde was a third cornerback last season, operating in nickel and dime defenses.

Now, his role may be expanding.

“He's definitely someone that I think has earned the opportunity to compete to be on the field all three downs,” McCarthy said.

The Packers are also expected to evaluate the merits of the safety rookie draft class.
