Michael Clayton doesn't believe Bucs will make him walk plank

Receiver doesn't see this as his final game in Tampa Brad Biggs

The worst mistake an NFL franchise can make is to perpetuate an error.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers can’t take back the contract they signed wide receiver Michael Clayton to last season, but they could just be done with him. It’s a scenario that Rick Stroud explores for the St. Petersburg Times.

Could tonight’s meeting with the Houston Texans be the final time Clayton plays for the Bucs? The team signed him to a $26 million, five-year contract before last season, a deal that included $10 million guaranteed. He responded with 16 receptions for 230 yards and one touchdown, and never fit in with offensive coordinator Greg Olson.

Now, the Bucs are abuzz over rookies Mike Williams and Arrelious Benn and you have to wonder if there will be room on the 53-man roster for Clayton. He’s due to make $3.5 million this season, guaranteed money that has made it impossible for the team to trade him. He didn’t even play in the third preseason game vs. Jacksonville last week.

Clayton doesn’t add value on special teams, something most teams demand from their reserve wide receivers. The team cut bait with running back Derrick Ward. It wouldn’t be a stunner if they get rid of another player they made a mistake with.

“You look at all scenarios, and anything could happen,” Clayton told Stroud. “If it was a trade scenario, they don't want me to get hurt. So I don't think I'll play much.

“I don't believe (this will be my last game with the Bucs). I'll believe it when it happens," he said. "But I can't see it. I can't even live in that world.”

I think Michael Clayton is gone. The Buccaneers need to eradicate their mistakes instead of perpetuating them.

I'd like to see a hardcore NFL reporter confront this guy and ask him if he feels he has earned his contract. I know that will never happen so I will settle for Glazer inviting him to work out in his dojo. What a bunch of fags.

Free Mariotti.
