Rookie Michael Sam may not be a member of the St. Louis Rams much longer.
For as good of a preseason as he's had, the Rams are absolutely stacked on the defensive line, specifically at defensive end. And with Ethan Westbrooks having as good, if not better, of a preseason than Sam, the 2013 SEC co-defensive player of the year could be on the outside looking in.
But if Sam had this kind of preseason on almost every other NFL team, he'd be a shoe-in for a roster spot. And it appears the rookie seventh-rounder out of Missouri knows this.
“I’m very confident,” Sam said after Thursday's preseason game, via the Associated Press. “I’m going to sleep really well (Thursday night) and I’m very confident I’m going to be on a team, the Rams or any other team in the NFL.”
Sam had five tackles Thursday night and tallied three sacks during the preseason.
Sam proved he's at least in the discussion of being on a 53-man roster. While his combine measurables were lacking, he showed he can play the game. Therefore, a team will likely give him a chance if the Rams decide not to.
