Michael Vick: Geno Smith is Jets' starting quarterback

Michael Vick put a dent into the plans of those that want to follow the Jets' starting quarterback competition this offseason.

Speaking to the Newark Star-Ledger at a charity event in Philadelphia, Vick said that second-year quarterback Geno Smith is the team's starting quarterback at this time.

"Geno's the starting quarterback for that football team," Vick said. "Ultimately our goal is to try to help Geno become the best quarterback that he can be. Myself and [third-stringer Matt Simms] are all trying to put him in a position where he can get better from year one to year two."

As a veteran and given his history, Vick has learned how to say the right things publicly — something the Jets haven't had in quite some time. Vick's comments will momentarily take some limelight off of the Jets' quarterback position, which will be followed closely once training camp rolls around.

But it's still hard to think that Smith will open the season over Vick, barring unforeseen improvement this offseason. Smith had some positive moments but struggled throughout the 2013 season. Vick's addition could improve the position for the short-term while allowing Smith to learn under him for the time being.
