Michael Vick, the Eagles and guaranteed money

Philly wanted QB’s rights for 2010, but for how much? Andrew Brandt

Michael Vick is still an Eagle. To clarify and answer many reader questions about the roster bonus, there was no affirmative action the Eagles needed to take for Vick to remain with the team for the 2010 league year. He earns his roster bonus by, well, being on the roster, which he is as of today. It’s that simple. Contrary to reports, the Eagles have not “picked up his option”; they simply have not released or traded him from their roster prior to today.

So are the Eagles investing $2.5 million in Vick today? Well, maybe. They are certainly investing the $1.5-million roster bonus. As for the $1M guaranteed salary…well, not exactly, as you’ll see below.

The curious case of the Eagles and Michael Vick illustrates an aspect of “guaranteed money” in a league that has not been nearly as giving in this department as the NBA and Major League Baseball.

The Eagles negotiation

In August, Vick and his agent, with counsel from Tony Dungy, were looking for a team with a solid image and reputation, a secure and stable situation at starting quarterback and a one-year contract to ease back into football and rehabilitate his career.

They got two out of three.

As important as not having a second year on the deal was to Team Vick, it was equally or more important to the Eagles to have the rights to Vick in 2010. Why? To keep their options open, which is what every team tries to do, toward the use and/or trade of the player.

What was their investment? In 2009, it was pretty simple: about $100,000 per game, through a salary of a bit over $1.6M. That part of the negotiation was straightforward.

Like many negotiations, however, the key issue here was about future risk and reward rather than present money. The second year was the issue. Determined to hold on to potential free agency in 2010, Vick’s side fought hard for a one-year deal until it finally relented. Vick had options, but those teams, while willing to give him a one-year deal, had other flaws.

The 2010 guarantee commitment

Having lost that battle, the next discussion was the amount of commitment for the Eagles to retain Vick in 2010. Of course, the 2010 salary is irrelevant as the team could easily trade or release Vick way before that salary became realistic. The issue, of course, was how much would be committed in March and how much of that salary would be guaranteed. This is where the bulk of the negotiation was, with Vick wanting that number to reflect starting quarterback numbers. Ultimately, the sides agreed to the following settlement over the second year (2010):

Vick’s 2010 salary was to be $3.75M, with $1M guaranteed on the fifth day of the league year (today), the same day the Eagles were required pay him a roster bonus of $1.5M.

The offset

As with many contracts involving future guaranteed salary, there is offset language. This means that if Vick is released prior to the season and signs with another team, the $1M guaranteed amount would be reduced by the compensation received from the other team. This “offset” language is certainly valuable to the Eagles in this situation, assuming that Vick will be playing in the NFL in 2010, whether for them or another team.

All guarantees are not created equal (as we’ll see in looking at Jake Delhomme’s later this week).

Thanks for that explanation, Andrew. So basically, they paid $1.5 mill to hang onto him up to the end of camp, by which time they presumably will have traded him. I would have thought his trade value would be greatest right now, and they would have pushed for a deal to avoid paying the $1.5 mill. Surely they could have dealt him by now, or are teams lowballing them? Is their plan to wait out the league in hopes that a team will be desperate for a starting QB, or were they willing to pay the money for insurance in case they dealt McNabb and/or Kolb?

So does this money go towards paying off the creditors he left hanging with his bankruptcy filing? Does it go to animal welfare groups? Or does he buy more bling for his ears?

Who cares what he does with his money. Vick paid his dues by spending 18 month in prison and time on probation and he is still on probation. Why do people such as you want him to keep paying for what he did. He is just like you or I, he should be able to get paid whatever the market says that he is worth and I don't feel that he is obligated to keep paying for whatever crimes he committed to those dogs because YOU feel he has to. People like you always thing that YOU are holier than thou, that somehow you are beyond having any blemishes on your life chart. Well, I am telling you, you are not exempt and therefore, you have no right to sit in judgement of Vick. Only his Master and Creator has that right!

I am sure the people he owes money to care very much about what he does with his salary. They are OWED things and it isn't an explanation. Particularly as the economy goes down, they'll be even more interested in recouping their receivables...

Duck and SJ, WHY DO YOU CARE? You hate him. Got it. He paid his penalty but not to your liking. Got it. He's a corn-row sporting thug who should be a parriah for the rest of his life because YOU DONT LIKE HIM. Got it. I met both Michael and Marcus Vick in Blacksburg and I was not a fan of either of them. I didn't like either of them. BUT YOU GUYS NEED TO MOVE ON. You guys give no-life-having losers a bad name for hanging on to old hate. Run for local office, pick up a hobby, say hello to a girl (and no! chatting with a webcam girl doesn't count). But by all means, for the sake of society, please MOVE THE F&#% ON.

Slow your roll there hero, where did I ever state that I hate him? It seems to me that most have moved on except for the fans of Mike who feel or perceive a slight around every corner. Real or imagined.

Maybe when you aren't living in mom's basement and become a productive member of society you'll realize that the money he owes people is friken real and those people who were counting on that money to live their own lives, pay their own employees or keep themselves afloat.

It has nothing to do with liking or hating M. Vick but everything to do with the fact that a player (doesn't matter the name) is being paid a ton of money and he SHOULD be paying his creditors back before he does anything else.

I CARE because there are people out here who aren't doing so well financially and they could be ok or better if M Vick (or any other debtor) would pay their bills.

Get off your horse, ask mom to Tivo your cartoons for you and open your eyes to the fact that it has nothing to do with hate but a desire for people to do the right thing, pay what they owe, so OTHERS can live their life.

I HOPE SOMEBODY GOES AND PROTEST Ben Roethlisberger FOR RAPING WOMEN LIKE HE'S Pepe Le Pew!!!!! and Mark McGuire to sense you missed heckling him because he left before you found out. If Ben can play then Adam “Pacman” Jones can to. They gave pacman an “Outside the Lines” report but Floyd Landis an Ben get a line across the screen. Look at the leader of 2 Superbowl for the Steeler taking Pu$$y but Nancy Grace comes out for Tiger Woods, Chris Brown, Kobe, Vick and even Charles Barkley but no Roethlisberger media monster to feed!! Where is Roger Clemens’ “Game of Shadows”. You haters are funny like that. The media monster is chasing Glenn Beck’s viewers and rating. I see now. Bottom line is that if Ben can be the face of a franchise then I think Adam “Pacman” Jones can play and Vick hurt dogs but Ben rapes women!!!!!!

History proves that punishment & criticism towards white & black athletes for their crimes or lifestyles are not equal. Hugh Hefner lives with many women & flaunts & he is considered an American icon & not a polygamist! Uncle Luke did it & he was considered a pimp & a woman exploiter plus his song "Me So Horny" got banned by the United States Supreme Court! Babe Ruth was a married womanizer & he is the GOD of baseball and idolized. Tiger Woods cheated and he was basically persecuted & was considered a disgrace to golf! Bill Romanowski ripped his teammates helmet off and broke his face which ended the guys NFL career after only being in the NFL for 2 years & was fined $60,000, not charged with a crime, and still allowed to play. Steven Jackson & Ron Artest fought fans & got suspended for a year. Latrell Spreewell choked his coach & got suspended for a season & lost millions of dollars. John McEnroe's volatile outbursts on the tennis court were considered legendary. Serena Williams outburst cost her $82,500 and national criticism. The list goes on & on! Mainstream media seems to be oblivious to the perception of a double standard or that they tend to focus on Black athletes who get in trouble. How would the press treat a White Michael Vick?

Just a thought HE PAYED HIS DEBT FOR KILLING THOSE DOGS THAT BELONGED TO HIM,THOSE DOGS THAT WERE NOT HUMANS,THOSE DOGS THAT WERE NOT KIDNAPPED OFF THE STREET,THOSE DOGS THAT ARE AND HAVE BEEN BRED SOLEY FOR THE PURPOSE OF FIGHTING SINCE BEFORE TUT,HE IS FREE TO DO AND SAY AS HE WISHES,TO WORK AND TO SUCCEED,GET OIFF HIS BACK

I'll type this as slow as possible for you willie - it isn't about the "debt" of killing dogs or the debt he owes society. It's his debts stemming from him accepting goods and services (like cars, clothes, legal defense, houses, boats etc) that he has NOT paid for.

That's the debt being talked about here. Going to jail does not wipe your monetary debts clean. Mike can play for whomever or for whatever amount he can sign - fine by me, just so long as he's paying his FINANCIAL debts to those people who trusted him to pay them when they provided those goods and services.

To the others looking to compare Mike to Hugh or Ben, here's a news flash - neither Ben nor Mike have been arrested and convicted for anything. Neither Hugh or Ben have large outstanding (for willie who doesn't know the difference) FINANCIAL debts that they are REQUIRED to pay. Learn the difference between the term Polygamist and Philanderer. There is a difference as it applies to the point you are trying to make.

Some of you have serious comprehension skills. I pray you aren't in a position to make decisions that affect other people's lives.

The question is - in any new contract with Mike, are there mechanisms in place to get people their monies OWED to them by M. Vick? If so - great. If not - why? If you owe money to the IRS they simply take it, what you have and what you make - directly. If you have had a money judgment against you in court due to not paying your debts - they take it. Is this the same with a contracted person? Are the owner's and league required to remove those monies to be distributed to his creditors? Can an owner "assume" Mike's debts much like a company involved in a merger does and if he/she does - is that "assumption" and payment of debt part of his contract as it affects the cap? (normal cap year/rules).

Just a thought...The bankruptcy court has already dealt with these issues. Considering the future earning potential of a pro athlete in the peak of his career, I'm sure Vick's savvy creditors cut themselves in for repayment should he rejoin the league. I suspect he is not walking away from 100% of the debt he incurred. I know it's fun for some haters to spout, but it's HIGHLY probable that creditors are getting repaid as Vick is getting paid.

Legal - that's my question. Pro-athletes don't have a typical pay check type of deal. What's the mechanism for him to pay his creditors? Is it deducted right from any payment, are they relying on Mike to actually sit an write a check etc.

We see where some athlete has back child support he hasn't paid or things like this - leads me to believe that there isn't a mechanism built into the contract to get people paid as ordered by the court.

Duck, why the fuck are you worrying bout who this man owes, you don't have anything to do with his financial situation, does he owe you. He not the first to have creditors and he won't be the last. By the way you skipped all around the facts bout white people being handled the same as blacks in the aboved mentioned statement by MICHAEL WILLIAMS. You answered two of them i guess, but please feel free to explain the rest, i'm listening.

WOW!!!! I was really going to ask a question, but, ...This is unbelievable...You people really want to hang a man for his wrong doings...I'm sure none of you got arrested for a D.U.I. or domestic violence, drugs, rape, baby touching, or whatever. Point being whatever you were arrested for I know for a fact after the arrest and the sentencing you wished you never would've done whatever it was that you did. Don't you think Vick feels the same way. Especially knowing theres extreme haterizm out there ready to put a steady flow of hate rain right over the roof of his house. People are rediculous. He's a man, and i personally feel, soon to be legand. If Vick were to get the first string title, him and the other handfull of hard hitting players would earn them a ring. Hate him all you want. The more you hate the more people are talking and about whom, MIchael Vick. So hey, maybe he doesn't mind all the publicity. Oh yeah and f.y.i. he's given plenty of money to animal shelters and humane societies. I'm sure he feels like i do. Haters are my biggest fans. Always on somebodies mind, if i'm they can talk about, good or bad they're talkin. YA DIG!!!!!!
