Mickey Loomis: ‘I have always thought of Drew as a great player’

Embattled New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis called a Yahoo! Sports report that he considers Drew Brees to be very good but not “great” ridiculous.

Before news of the bounty program with the Saints broke on Friday, one that very much involves Loomis, the GM told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that Brees is very respected as the team works to sign him to a long-term contract before Monday’s deadline to place the franchise tag on players.

The Saints need to sign Brees before the deadline in order to use the tag on another player like guard Carl Nicks or wide receiver Marques Colston as they face difficult decisions with their own free agents. But negotiations on a deal for Brees have dragged on.

I have always thought of Drew as a great player. Always,” Loomis told the Times-Picayune. “Even when his shoulder was damaged (in 2006) I thought he was a great player. That’s why we wanted him, and it’s ridiculous for anyone to think otherwise.”

Per the report, the Saints offered Brees a deal averaging $18 million per season previously. One sticking point could be how money in a deal is distributed. Brees will want the deal frontloaded. Stay tuned. Maybe the Saints can produce some positive news and momentum with a deal for their franchise quarterback while talk of bounties swirls.
