The rap music at Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel's campus Pro Day workout. The huddling. The shoulder pads and helmet. The presence of former president George H.W. Bush and former first lady Barbara Bush.
It didn't do much for hard-nosed Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer.
“The huddles and the different things and the music, the sideshow stuff,” Zimmer said, via the Houston Chronicle “It was a sideshow.”
What about wearing the pads?
“It was a different workout,” Zimmer said. “It’s the first time I’ve ever seen it. This one was a little different in how it was choreographed. People like that or they don’t like that, I don’t know.”
Not everyone agreed with Zimmer, though.
“The atmosphere and everything that was involved and then to come out and perform like he did, that was great,” Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said. “I think that’s no different than how he’s performed all year, right? Perform under pressure. Felt like more of a pressurized environment with a lot of eyes watching him and he did a great job.”
Added Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith: “Pretty much like I thought he would do. He’s been a great player for a long time. The guy’s a football player. He can do it all. That’s impressive. Most guys come out in T-shirts and you don’t play in T-shirts, so coming out made a statement throwing it in pads. Accurate. Great mobility. Then, he has great video. There are a lot of things to like about him.”
