Believe it or not, there was actually a time when Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict was viewed as a potential first round pick.
But those days are long, long gone.
ICONThere's a good chance Burfict could go undrafted this weekend.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports is reporting that NFL teams have been informed Burfict and Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley failed their combine drug tests by testing positive for marijuana.
The news serves as yet another black mark for Burfict on a resume that could keep the linebacker from hearing his name called during this week’s NFL draft. Conditioning issues, a poor attitude on the field and a disappointing combine performance in February are just a few of the reasons why the 21-year-old has seen his stock plummet in recent months.
As for Hosley, Glazer reports that the cornerback sent a letter to all 32 NFL teams apologizing for the failed drug test.
We’ll see how the news impacts each player’s stock this weekend, but for a guy like Burfict who already has several strikes against him, it may be time to start thinking about another line of work.
