In trying to deny that the Washington Redskins are attempting to trade Albert Haynesworth, Mike Shanahan did just that.

If only every NFL coach was as wonderfully transparent and clear as to what his and the team’s intentions are.

"There is nothing to clarify. It is just speculation,” Shanahan told Thomas George of Fanhouse. “He's part of the organization. I am just looking for him to come in and work and be like everyone else. No, we're not going to trade him at all, unless someone gives us something we would have to consider, that's pretty standard with any player on your roster. He's a pretty smart guy. He's really talented. I think I can get that out of him.'

Sure. Shanahan might be able to get that out of Haynesworth if he was interested in playing in a 3-4 scheme. Haynesworth has made it clear he has as much interest playing in the 3-4 scheme run by Jim Haslett as he did in the 4-3 system run by Greg Blache last season. In fact, Haynesworth is completely opposed to being the nose tackle in the 3-4. It’s just as a league source told us in January. If Haynesworth didn’t like his responsibilities playing tackle for Blache, he really wasn’t going to be bent sideways in a 3-4, whether he was asked to play tackle or end.

Basically, the Redskins are looking at getting rid of Haynesworth as addition by subtraction. He doesn’t want to be there and the last thing a new regime wants from the get-go is a disgruntled star player not interested in playing by the rules the others are.

We’ll have to wait and see if the Redskins find something they “have to consider.” Stay tuned.
