Selected with the 30th overall pick in the 2011 draft, Muhammad Wilkerson has lived up to his billing with the New York Jets.
Productive in his first two seasons, Wilkerson broke out in a big way for 10.5 sacks this past season. The year led the Jets to pick up Wilkerson's fifth-year option, keeping him under contract through the 2015 season.
But at some point in the near future, Wilkerson hopes to get a new contract. Speaking to ESPN.com, Wilkerson said he's in no rush, though.
"I would like a deal, but when it happens, it happens," Wilkerson said. "I'm not saying I want it to be before the regular season. When it happens, it happens. I'm going to come in and work hard and take every day like I always do."
The patient approach should probably pay off for Wilkerson in the long run. If he puts in a season similar to his 2013 campaign, the Jets will have no other choice but to sign him for the long-term.
